New Priority Program "Semiconductor Spintronics"

Prof. Michael Oestreich from the Institute for Solid State Physics is the coordinator.

Spintronics is a new area of basic research where in addition to the charge of the electrons the magnetic moment (the spin) is used for information representation and processing. Therefore the compounded word "spintronics", thus "electronics" and "spin". Objective of the newly established DFG priority program "Semiconductor Spintronics" is research on the spin properties in semiconductors and their possible applications in all-new semiconductor devices.

The new established priority program "Semiconductor Spintronics" will be funded by the German Research Foundation DFG from the beginning of 2007. In the first period of the program lies the focus on the combination of theory, experimental physics and material science to provide a basis for spintronic devices. In the second part of the program the engineering component will be emphasized to attach more importance on the development of all-new devices and quantum mechanical circuit structures.

Coordinator of the new priority program is Prof. Dr. Michael Oestreich from the Institute for Solid State Physics of the University of Hannover. For better communication and networking is now the webpage of the priority program launched with friendly support of the LNQE under www.Spinelektronik.de.
