Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ertmer has been awarded the Lower Saxony Cross of Merit 1st Class (Niedersächsische Verdienstkreuz 1. Klasse) by Lower Saxony's Minister of Science Björn Thümler. The Lower Saxony Order of Merit is awarded in recognition of services of particular significance to the state. Prof. Wolfgang Ertmer receives the honor for his outstanding work in atomic and molecular physics, laser physics and quantum optics.
Prof. Wolfgang Ertmer is one of the "fathers" of so-called quantum engineering. As a member of the Laboratory of Nano and Quantum Engineering, he was significantly involved from the beginning. As spokesperson, Prof. Wolfgang Ertmer and his colleagues brought the Cluster of Excellence QUEST to Leibniz University Hannover and is also involved in the Cluster of Excellence QuantumFrontiers. After many years at the Institute of Quantum Optics, he is the founding director of the Institute of Satellite Geodesy and Inertial Sensor Technology of the German Aerospace Center, which is currently being built in the immediate vicinity of the LNQE research building.
