The X-ECD project team, consisting of four members of the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Measurement Technology led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Zimmermann (GEM), is developing the next generation of an electron capture detector (ECD) for the precise measurement of environmental toxins such as pesticides. In contrast to the previous ECD, the X-ECD will do without radioactivity and is therefore a safer and more environmentally friendly solution with the additional potential to outperform conventional ECDs in terms of analytical performance. The project is being supported with approximately €730,000 from the EXIST research transfer programme of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. This makes it the second EXIST project to emerge from the GEM Institute. The aim of the project is to market the X-ECD as an independent spin-off after the end of the funding phase in 2026.
